Mumbai is all set to welcome the city’s most beloved Lord Ganesha on September 13. The dishes prepared during the festival vary from day to day and from place to place. Here is a definitive list of eateries and dishes you can try during the festival.

While going all over the city for Ganapati darshan, make sure you bookmark these eateries famed for their Maharashtrian Ganapati delicacies and make a pet puja stop.

Prakash Dugdha Mandir, Girgaum

This modest, tiny and value for money eatery is known for its rajgirha puri, sabudana wada, shrikhand, thalipeeth and kharas

Mama Kane’s Swacha Uphargriha, Dadar (West)

Best known for misal and piyush and very popular for its Maharashtrian thali, which is also available in a mini-helping

Sujata Uphar Griha, Girgaum, Thakurdwar

Eat the varan bhaat and dalimbi usal. For dessert, have the kesari shrikhand, kharwas or just save space for the puranpoli

Bombay Canteen, Kamala Mills, Lower Parel

One of the few places serving up the famed rishi bhaji which is prepared on Rishi Panchami, the day after Ganesh Chaturthi

And now for the sweets! Modaks rule, sharing pride of place with puranpoli and karanji. This festival isn’t complete without modaks.  Whether you prefer the traditional ukadiche, the deep fried kind or the mawa and motichoor modak, the best places to indulge in the quintessential Ganapati sweet treat are listed here.

Modakam, Prabhadevi

For the best modaks in Mumbai. Have the ukadiche, goodies made from coconut, jaggery and sugar, placed in a thin rice flour wrap and steamed, before a ghee topping.

Adarsh Mithai Mandir, Grant Road

Most famous for their mawa modaks. Their cashew, fig and mango modak’s also very popular.

Madhuri Puranpoli, Vile Parle

Delivers only puranpoli, which are home-made, fresh and delicious

Panshikar, Girgaum, Dadar, Matunga, Bandra East, Goregaon and Vile Parle (East)

Best for karanji, the sweet made in every Maharashtrian home for Ganapati and Diwali

MM Mithaiwala. Malad West

Famed for its contemporary range of modaks – the classic kesar peda malai modak. the colourful rangoli modak, the kaju modak and the shahi barfi modak

Aaswad, Dadar

Feast on shrikhand, puranpoli, kharwas and modak
