We were eagerly awaiting the opening of Hoppum to eat the appams and stringhoppers. This Sri Lankan-inspired café offers a great choice in coconut curries, appams and other South Indian delicacies.
It has an airconditioned indoor space as well as an alfresco sitting area. It’s run by two brothers who take a personal interest in the food and customers.
There’s quite a large menu for such a small-sized outlet. You choose your staple – from hopper, string hopper, neer dosa, paratha or kottu roti.
We placed the order and soon after one of the brothers met us and told us that a particular dish we’d ordered was not upto the mark tastewise. He offered us a portion to taste, we liked it and stuck to our order:
Sri Lankan Mutton Roll - yummy
Egg Chilli Cheese Hopper (good. but I’d have preferred more cheese)
String hopper with prawn moilee – good portion of prawns and an ideal choice if you like thick coconut curries
Chicken Pepper Fry with a hopper
Vathalappam – delicious made of coconut milk and cashew – so good we ordered a second portion of this
Sadly, we found a strand of hair in one of our dishes – they apologised. One of the owners came and took it away and it was replaced with a full portion.
I’d like to note that they managed their appams well. Bringing them promptly to the table.
I am personally thrilled to find a place offering hoppers and stringhoppers.
Go if you enjoy appams and coconut curries and South Indian style of cuisine. If you don’t want a coconut curry, have the hoppers with one of the appetisers…
I enjoyed the hopper with egg, chilli and cheese so much that I will definitely have it on my next visit with a selection of appetisers.
It’s attracting a lot of people and it’s a welcome addition to the ’hood.
They offer several items for vegan and gluten-free dietary choices.
